The blaze broke out at the Oxy building renovation project on Place de Brouckère, where more than 200 workers were on site, and spread through elevator shafts before reaching an underground section of the building.

Firefighters have rescued a number of workers, but authorities said several people were found dead and six others remain missing. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Local media outlet Bruzz, citing the Brussels fire brigade, reported that an initial fire on the lower floors of the building was brought under control relatively quickly. However, flames spread through the lift shafts and ignited a second fire in an underground level, complicating rescue efforts.
