Pentagon designates China-backed campus cultural centers a threat to US national security
Defense secretary Pete Hegseth alleges Confucius Institutes operating in disguise on US university campuses
The â US defense department has designated Chinese-funded cultural centers on university campuses â known as Confucius â Institutes âÂÂas a threat to US national security, defense secretary Pete â Hegseth said on Friday.
Washington has long accused Confucius Institutes of being Chinese propaganda â tools and has taken steps to âÂÂcrack down on them.
Hegseth, âÂÂin a âÂÂvideo posted on social media, alleged that Confucius âÂÂInstitutes were operating under disguise at US universities and that the Pentagon had added them to its list of institutions that threaten US national security.
âÂÂIt turns âÂÂout that 80 new propaganda cells across 30 universities had popped âÂÂup using different names and different charters, but with the same mission: to steal intellectual property and to infiltrate the minds â of American students,â Hegseth said.
The defense department over âÂÂthe âÂÂpast two months has âÂÂsystematically âÂÂdismantled every single one of âÂÂthese organizationsâÂÂ, he âÂÂsaid.
The Chinese âÂÂembassy âÂÂin Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
