Meta releases Muse Spark Open, a new âÂÂopen-weightâ AI model
Meta says Muse excels at âÂÂmulti-step reasoningâ and âÂÂcomplex software engineeringâ as it races to catch up to Chinese rivals
Meta on Thursday launched a new open-weight AI model which it claims rivals, and in some cases outperforms, similar products from leading Chinese developers.
Muse Spark Open âÂÂis the most capable US open-weight model to date,â MetaâÂÂs chief of AI Alexandr Wang wrote on X.
Unlike so-called closed models â such as AnthropicâÂÂs Claude or OpenAIâÂÂs ChatGPT â developers can download the parameters, known as weights and biases, of an open-weight model and modify them.
Chinese developers have emerged as dominant players in the open-weight market for AI models over the past couple of years.
AlibabaâÂÂs Qwen, Moonshot AIâÂÂs Kimi K3 and Z.aiâÂÂs GLM models have been considered open-weight frontrunners globally, but Meta claims its new open model now competes on a similar level.
âÂÂBuilt for coding and agentic work,â Muse Spark Open âÂÂexcels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning,â Meta said in a blogpost, adding that âÂÂstrong safeguardsâ have been integrated into the new model.
Muse Spark Open is also âÂÂoptimizedâ to run on AppleâÂÂs advanced M5 Ultra chips, Meta said, signaling an unusual partnership between the two tech companies.
Muse Spark Open requires significant computing power. Users can run the model on two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips to create a âÂÂsupercomputerâ on their own desktop, Meta said.
The launch comes just days after Meta announced its newest closed model, which it said rivalled the most advanced versions of ChatGPT and Claude.
MetaâÂÂs AI efforts were initially focused on open models, but more recently Zuckerberg has pushed the company to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic.
