Gatorade maker recalls 122,000 cases of popular sports drink across 37 US states

PepsiCo initiated class II recall of 28oz bottles last month over ‘undeclared’ yellow dyes, FDA notice says

About 122,000 cases of the popular sports drink Gatorade have been voluntarily recalled across 37 US states due to their having “undeclared” food dye, according to an official federal notice.

The varieties of the drink involved in the notice include 28oz bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Lime Zero, Orange and Gatorade Orange Zero, the notice said. Gatorade’s manufacturer – the soda giant PepsiCo – initiated its recall on 25 September, said the advisory, which was posted on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s website.

The notice said the recall was considered class II, implying “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote”, according to the FDA.

“Undeclared Yellow No 6 and/or Yellow No 5” dyes were listed in the FDA notice as the “reason for recall” for people who are potentially sensitive to them.

PepsiCo did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Guardian.

The states listed for the recall are: Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

CBS News reported that it was not known whether refunds were available for people who purchased the recalled Gatorade drinks.

The FDA has come under fire during Donald Trump’s second presidency, including after the agency implemented layoffs, slashing its staff by almost 20%.
