NC State has parted ways with head coach Dave Doeren after a 3-4 start to the season, the school announced Saturday.

The move comes after a 31-28 loss at Stanford on Friday, the latest disappointment in a season NC State had believed would be one in which it would compete for an ACC championship.

"I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride," NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement released by the school on Saturday. "I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role."

Doeren will be owed $10.3 million. He had three years remaining on his deal.

Doeren was the fourth-longest-tenured coach in the FBS, taking over the Wolfpack in 2013 and going on to become the school's winningest coach, posting a 95-70 record.

But for all Doeren's success at the program, NC State was never able to progress from a consistently good program to one that had a chance to win at the highest level. Doeren never won more than nine games in a season, and the Wolfpack never made it to an ACC championship game.

NC State was expected to be a contender in the ACC this year after a heavy investment in keeping star quarterback CJ Bailey. Instead, the team was blown out in its opener against Virginia, lost in gut-wrenching fashion after Bailey fumbled in the end zone on the final play vs. Vanderbilt, and endured a flurry of injuries that have left the Wolfpack below .500.

Running backs coach Todd Goebbel will take over as interim coach for the remainder of the season, and NC State will begin a nationwide search for Doeren's replacement, the school said.
