This Netflix Thriller Is a Secret Masterpiece That Can Be Binged in Just 10 Hours

It’s been several years since The Society began streaming on Netflix, and the 10-episode series is still a great binge-watch. The streaming service has offered up plenty of exciting and engaging worlds for us to become immersed in over the past few years, and when we’re looking for a thriller series to watch over the weekend, we’re likely to find something that we love. From the creepy world of Tall Pines Academy on Wayward and the seemingly peaceful suburban setting of The Beast in Me to the dark serial killer stories on Mindhunter, there’s a lot to choose from.

Netflix has plenty of shows that tell frightening stories full of twists and small towns where nothing is as calm as it first seems. Even so, The Society feels different. Since it only has one season, it’ll only take you around 10 hours to watch, and it’s an exciting story with strong characters.

Netflix’s ‘The Society’ Is a Fantastic and Quick Binge Watch

The Society premiered on Netflix on May 10th, 2019, and has a captivating premise: a group of teenagers living in West Ham, Connecticut, realize that there are no adults around anymore, and they have to fight to survive. The show has been compared to Lord of the Flies, which has an upcoming adaptation, and it’s definitely another great story about power, competition, friendship, and courage.

You won’t be able to stop watching and wondering if the high schoolers are going to crack the code of where the adults went and what comes next. And that’s all thanks to The Society‘s realistic characters. The series features several teen tropes, including Becca Gelb’s (Gideon Adlon) pregnancy storyline and the complicated relationship between sisters Allie (Kathryn Preston) and Cassie Pressman (Rachel Keller). Some characters are rebels, and others are people pleasers who want to do the right thing.

However, the characters are deeper than what we typically see in the young adult genre. Becca and Sam Eliot (Sean Berdy) have a beautiful friendship, and as he supports her through her unexpected pregnancy, the show paints a moving picture of what a true connection can look like. Sure, the characters have to handle big questions about life and death, which makes them more interesting than your average TV high schoolers worrying about dances, new clothes, and love interests. But their fear and anxiety are also relatable. Sure, we might not be stuck in a small town, wondering what’s going on (and our city or town most likely isn’t made up of only teenagers). Still, everyone has trouble dealing with big changes and being thrust into a strange new situation.

Christopher Keyser, who created the 1990s teen drama Party of Five, also created The Society, and both series have heavy emotions, love stories, and surprising moments. Of course, The Society is a thriller, which makes it creepier and, ultimately, more fascinating than the ’90s series.

Unfortunately for fans, Netflix canceled The Society after Season 1, which meant never learning the answer to the big (okay, massive) cliffhanger in Season 1, Episode 10, “How It Happens.” Most of the time (okay, all the time), this would be annoying. In this case, The Society suggests what’s coming, and we can reflect on a potential Season 2 storyline while enjoying the ride so far.
