Sir Ridley Scott, the director and producer known for his work on franchises like Alien, Gladiator and Blade Runner, has seen his career undergo intense scrutiny in recent years. Films like House of Gucci and Napoleon were very divisive among critics and audiences, and it wasn’t until last year’s release of Gladiator II that Scott was able to see one of his recent movies achieve a solid box office performance. Regardless, the 87-year-old Hollywood legend shows no signs of stopping, and has now teased a mysterious future project. A project that he calls the “best” he has ever read.
One of Scott’s best and most underrated films, Kingdom of Heaven, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The film is set to be re-released on 4K, and the director talked to Collider about the historical war epic. The conversation soon shifted to other important subjects, with Scott being asked if there was anything he wanted to work on in the future. And his answer reveals his plans for a mysterious Western…

All 5 of Ridley Scott’s Sci-Fi Movies, Ranked
Ridley Scott has contributed greatly to science fiction, making some of the best films in the genre over the years. But which one is the best?
While the renowned filmmaker has worked across many genres, there are a few that Scott hasn’t tackled yet. One of them is a Western, and while some of his films have incorporated the genre’s tropes, he hasn’t actually made a pure Western movie. While teasing his next endeavor, Scott also mentioned that it’s the best script he’s ever read in the genre.
“So, I have a Western, which is the best Western I’ve ever read. It was on a shelf of an author who had died. It’s from his estate. We tracked it. I bought the script, so I own it, and the moment will come to make it. So, I still have to do a musical. I still have to do a pirate movie. I still have to do a Western.”
Ridley Scott Has No Plans to Retire Any Time Soon
Scott didn’t reveal the project’s title “because someone will jump in,” hinting that it could be a popular property among other producers. The director also revealed that he will continue to make movies as long as he can. He’s in no rush to jump onto his next project, and firmly believes in the timeliness of all the stories he’s set to tell in the future: “If they’re good enough, and you know it’s not the moment because everyone’s afraid of it, you keep it sitting, waiting, and then come back.”
Recently, we reported the news that Scott feels like he’s done with the Alien franchise. His roles as director and producer in several of the time-consuming horror sci-fi films have probably worn him down, but this doesn’t mean that Scott will stop making movies. In fact, the director is currently working on the production of his latest film, the adaptation of Peter Heller’s apocalyptic sci-fi novel The Dog Stars. The film stars Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce and Benedict Wong, and it’s set to be released in March 2026.
