Newport County’s season opener against Notts County was delayed by an hour due to a pre-game medical emergency.
The club confirmed on social media at 2:26pm a supporter had been taken ill in the stands, which prompted an air ambulance to land on the pitch at Rodney Parade.
Another air ambulance arrived on the scene shortly after.
Due to the delays, the home side announced the League Two encounter would commence at an agreed time between the clubs that would allow both to undergo a sufficient warm-up.
But the match, which was scheduled to kick off at 3pm, was pushed back an hour as fans were evacuated out of the stadium.
“Everyone at Newport County sends their best wishes to the individual concerned,” the club said on X.
“We’d also like to thank all of the supporters for their patience.”
Notts County also shared their well wishes for the fan: “We await a further update on the condition of the supporter, who remains in our thoughts.”
Flight tracking website Flightradar later showed one of the air ambulances that landed at Rodney Parade had since made it to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
Newport went into the new League Two campaign as one of the favourites to be relegated following a bleak 2024/25 season.
Last term, the Exiles finished in 22nd out of 24 teams in English football’s fourth tier, meaning they escaped relegation by one place.
Newport picked up 49 points, seven more than 23rd-placed Carlisle United.

As for Notts County, they are targeting another promotion push having finished sixth last season, which got them into the play-offs.
However, it didn’t go to plan as they lost 2-0 on aggregate to AFC Wimbledon, who went on to win the play-off final and be promoted to League One.
