Despite his rapid rise over the years, Baltra showcases his underground roots with his moody, hard-hitting release “Gentle Tone” – a track that serves as an ode to the early forms of UKG.
After seeing Baltra in Hamburg earlier this year, this release doesn’t surprise me, his recent sets and output have leaned toward faster dance music. What I loved about this listening experience was the dreamy soundscape that had this eerie mood, and this was bolstered by a wobbly bass presence that’s bound to immediately shake the dance floor. Gliding over the shuffling 2 step rhythms is this emotive vocal sample, a feature that injects a melancholic feel into the track. This combination between moody and bouncy on “Gentle Tone” creates a compelling push-and-pull that makes the track both introspective and irresistibly danceable.
