Boston Common Golf has acquired former Open Championship winner Shane Lowry from The Bay Golf Club in the first-ever trade in TGL history, the league announced Monday.

Lowry will join his good friend Rory McIlroy when Boston Common Golf plays Los Angeles Golf Club in its opening match of the second TGL season on Jan. 2.

In exchange for Lowry, The Bay Golf Club acquired Boston Common's fourth selection to fill its open roster spot in each of the next three offseasons, as well as commercial considerations, TGL said.

TGL teams' rosters will expand to five players this coming season. The league said Boston Common's full roster will be announced shortly.

"I'm delighted to be joining Boston Common Golf," Lowry said in a statement. "Having Rory alongside me and being part of this group makes it particularly exciting, and I'm looking forward to helping the team bring a championship to Boston."

Last season, Boston Common's roster included McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama.

"Shane is a fierce competitor with a tremendous all-around game, and I'm excited to have him on our side," Bradley said. "He brings the kind of energy that makes team golf fun, and he'll fit right in with this group. We're eager to get back to SoFi Center, and adding Shane gives us even more confidence as we chase a championship for Boston."

Lowry, who is ranked 41st in the Official World Golf Ranking, is a 10-time winner around the world, including the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
