LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee and be placed on injured reserve, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Sunday.
Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, will miss at least the next four games. He is eligible to return to the roster for the Rams' Week 6 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
After the Rams' season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Garrett said his knee was not 100% healthy going into the game. He called his performance against San Francisco "the worst version of myself that I've put out there.
Garrett missed most of training camp with what Rams head coach Sean McVay called swelling in Garrett's knee. After the Week 1 game in Melbourne, Australia, Garrett declined to say which knee is injured, but he wore a sleeve on his left leg during several practices.
Garrett said Friday afternoon in Melbourne that he's "got to be better."
"I've got to find a way to recover and get back to the player I know I can be and I've shown that I've been before," Garrett said.
Garrett said while he was on the field, he was "a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than what [the 49ers] were doing."
"And that showed," Garrett said. "I wasn't who I needed to be for my team."
The Rams traded for Garrett this offseason, sending two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks, including a first-round selection in 2027 to the Cleveland Browns. The pass rusher set the single-season sack record with 23 last season for the Browns.
The loss to the 49ers was Garrett's first game without a tackle since Week 11 of the 2024 season and just the fourth of his career, according to ESPN Research.
