Seth Meyers on Trump canceling $1bn in federal funds: âÂÂIs he adding a waterslide to the reflecting pool?âÂÂ
Late-night hosts weighed in on TrumpâÂÂs relationship with tech leaders and the White HouseâÂÂs new AI-powered site
On Tuesday night, late-night hosts discussed a Maha summit in Washington DC, the White HouseâÂÂs new AI-powered website and Donald Trump once again falling asleep on live TV.
Seth Meyers
On NBC, Seth Meyers focused on the presidentâÂÂs ill-phrased announcement of the US murder rate declining. âÂÂWe have the best, uh, murder,â Trump said.
âÂÂWhat are you talking about, âÂÂWe have the best murderâÂÂ?â Meyers responded. âÂÂItâÂÂs a murder rate, not a murder rating.âÂÂ
On Monday, Trump also took issue with the US ambassador to China, David PerdueâÂÂs claim that he offered to sell weapons to China, saying: âÂÂI think he was probably talking about Taiwan.âÂÂ
âÂÂSo wait, are you saying that we have an ambassador to China who doesnâÂÂt know the difference between China and Taiwan?â asked Meyers. âÂÂThatâÂÂs like if Mr Met showed up to the stadium wearing a Yankees jersey.âÂÂ
Meanwhile, health officials in Florida have issued a local state of emergency after an outbreak of dengue fever. âÂÂMan, RFK Jr has only had the job two years and Florida is already turning into an episode of House,â the host laughed.
The White House has also rebuked criticism of taxpayer-funded TV ads. They said âÂÂthey are public service announcements that are âÂÂreminding Americans to love their countryâÂÂâÂÂ, explained Meyers, before quipping: âÂÂThe clearest sign of a healthy relationship is if you have to remind someone to love you.âÂÂ
Trump reportedly told congressional leaders on Friday that he was withdrawing nearly $1bn in federal funding.
âÂÂOh God, whatâÂÂs he doing to the reflecting pool now?â joked Meyers. âÂÂIs he adding a waterslide?âÂÂ
Meyers closed his monologue with news that the makers of a smart glasses brand have recalled frames after customers reported them overheating and causing burns.
âÂÂWell, I hate to break it to you,â he said, âÂÂbut no matter what smart glasses youâÂÂre wearing, youâÂÂre gonna get burned.âÂÂ
Jimmy Kimmel
On Jimmy Kimmel Live! the host discussed Trump hosting all the top tech executives at the White House for a lunch on Tuesday. The guest list included Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAIâÂÂs Greg Brockman and âÂÂHouse speaker Mike Johnson, âÂÂwho was there to ask if there was any way that AI could turn him into a real boyâÂÂ.
In a press conference, Trump announced that he was âÂÂchanging the nameâ of AI from âÂÂartificial intelligenceâ to âÂÂsuperintelligenceâ âÂÂSo far, everybody likes it,â he added.
âÂÂYes,â responded Kimmel drily. âÂÂIâÂÂm sure the guy whose companyâÂÂs name is OpenAI is very excited about this development.
âÂÂThe idea that our guardrails against AI are being erected by an addled 80-year-old man ⦠ItâÂÂs like asking your grandpa to set up a wifi router in your house. You just wouldnâÂÂt do it.âÂÂ
The host moved on to talk about the new AI-powered government website America.gov.
âÂÂA White House official called America.gov âÂÂa new front door for the federal governmentâÂÂ,â said Kimmel. âÂÂYou know, we need a new front door because Trump demolished the old front door to build his ballroom.âÂÂ
Kimmel added that Trump is still trying to blame all of AmericaâÂÂs struggles on his predecessor, again branding former president Joe Biden âÂÂsleepyâ in Oval Office remarks this week. Ironically, Trump fell asleep shortly after.
âÂÂOnly a few minutes after invoking the name âÂÂsleepy Joe BidenâÂÂ, nappy Don Trump drifted off to dreamland on live TV,â Kimmel said.
This week also saw the second annual Maha summit in DC in an event attended by JD Vance, Robert F Kennedy Jr and Mike Tyson.
âÂÂYou know weâÂÂre screwed when the sanest person in the group has half a face tattoo,â Kimmel said.
