Rookie Lendeborg jaws at âÂÂweak assâ DonÃÂiàand admits he didnâÂÂt watch much NBA
Lendeborg takes issue with appeals for foul calls
Forward says he had limited exposure to league
Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg had an extraordinary NBA debut as he jawed with Luka DonÃÂiÃÂ and admitted he had largely been exposed to the league through highlights before turning professional.
Lendeborg was given the task of guarding the Los Angeles Lakers star for large parts of WednesdayâÂÂs game, which DonÃÂiÃÂâÂÂs team won 127-105.
However, Lendeborg said he âÂÂlost all respectâ for DonÃÂiÃÂâÂÂs quest for foul calls during the game.
âÂÂI had a lot of respect for him [because] I didnâÂÂt really watch the NBA much,â Lendeborg said. âÂÂI just watched highlights and seen him kill people. But being in it firsthand and seeing all the whining and complaining, I lost all respect.âÂÂ
Lendeborg was the No 11 overall pick by the Warriors in this yearâÂÂs draft after helping Michigan win the NCAA Tournament. He had early success shutting down DonÃÂiÃÂ, but the six-time All-Star went on to score 28 points in the Lakersâ victory.
In the second quarter, DonÃÂiÃÂ was fouled by Lendeborg after a pump fake and celebrated in front of the rookie.
âÂÂYou get the foul call. Congratulations, bro,â Lendeborg said. âÂÂThen you talk to me like you did something great. CâÂÂmon, dog. That shit is weak. It kind of threw me off because I have so much respect for him. Gone, man. Gone.âÂÂ
Lendeborg was given a technical for jawing at DonÃÂiÃÂ. âÂÂI was telling him he sucks,â Lendeborg said. âÂÂHe canâÂÂt score on me. You talk but you canâÂÂt score on me. I said it the whole game. I said a couple cuss words, obviously. ThatâÂÂs why I got the technical. But I was letting him know.âÂÂ
Lendeborg seemed unimpressed by the league in general after his debut.
âÂÂI guess this is what the NBA is like, man,â Lendeborg said. âÂÂA lot of flopping, a lot of foul baiting, a lot of praying to the refs, man. Interesting first game for me.âÂÂ
Lendeborg had already made an impression before his debut. He admitted he used to hate his new teammate Stephen Curry because he was a fan of one of his playing rivals, Kyrie Irving. Warriors veteran Draymond Green, who is not shy of expressing his own opinions, had no problems with the rookieâÂÂs attitude.
âÂÂIn this league, everybody always says, âÂÂOh, thereâÂÂs certain guys you got to respect,âÂÂâ Green said after WednesdayâÂÂs game. âÂÂI ainâÂÂt come in the league like that. Everybody will say, âÂÂOh, the rookie learned his lesson.â WhatâÂÂd he learn? The next time he see him, go at his ass again.âÂÂ
For his part, DonÃÂiÃÂ said he was trying to stay out of trouble.
âÂÂHe was talking crazy,â DonÃÂiàsaid. âÂÂBut I wasnâÂÂt trying to talk back. This season, IâÂÂm not trying to get techs.âÂÂ
