Red Roses drop Kildunne to bench for Canada rematch as Mitchell seeks England reset

  • Star back loses starting place following 24-21 upset

  • Mitchell: ‘This week is about getting back to who we are’

Ellie Kildunne has been dropped to the bench for England’s third and final Test against Canada on Friday as the Red Roses look to bounce back from their first loss in four years.

The Maple Leafs defeated England 24-21 last Friday to end the Red Roses’ 41-game unbeaten streak. Kildunne starting from the bench, with Emma Sing at full-back, is one of four changes the head coach, John Mitchell, has made to his starting XV for the Test in Ottawa.

The wing Claudia Moloney-MacDonald has been dropped from the matchday 23 with Gloucester-Hartpury’s Mia Venner starting. Venner will partner Jess Breach, who retains her shirt after losing her firstr game for England on her 60th cap.

The captain, Meg Jones, will have a new centre partner as Tatyana Heard is also not on the team sheet, with the versatile Helena Rowland starting. There is just one change in the forward pack, with Sadia Kabeya starting at openside flanker as Alex Matthews drops to the bench.

The last time Kildunne did not start for England was in the 2025 Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Scotland after she suffered a concussion in the previous match. Kildunne has started the nine games England have played so far in 2026but last Friday she committed four knock-ons and Canada managed to stifle England’s standout player.

Sing will win her 18th cap for England, with her last start for her country coming against Italy in the Six Nations. In that match, which the Red Roses won 61-33 in Parma, the 25-year-old played at full-back with Kildunne starting on the wing.

Mitchell said: “Friday is our first chance to respond. Last Friday, we lost sight of what we could control when it mattered most; that’s on us to fix. This week is about getting back to who we are: hungry, accountable to each other and demanding more of ourselves than anyone outside this group ever could.
