How BYU and Texas Tech losses impact the playoff picture (2:02)

Oct 26, 2026, 07:50 AM ET

It was always going to be difficult to top the chaos of Week 7. But from the early window to a late-night battle between Big 12 heavyweights in Salt Lake City, Week 8 delivered plenty of drama.

Upsets? Week 8 had those. LaNorris Sellers and South Carolina poured cold water on Tennessee's College Football Playoff aspirations in a come-from-behind win. Texas Tech suffered the same experience in a charged visit to Cincinnati, as did USC at Wisconsin, where Lincoln Riley and the Trojans mustered just seven points coming out of a bye week.

Meanwhile, the shine of BYU's win over Notre Dame and rise to No. 2 in the AP Poll lasted all of seven days before the Cougars fell in a bizarre double-overtime road loss against a feisty UCF squad.

Narrow escapes? Look no further than Indiana surviving at the Big House, Alabama's fourth-quarter touchdowns to outlast Texas A&M and the late surge Boise State needed to avoid stumbling over Washington State in a week that saw several other Group of 6 contenders fall.

There were plenty of box-office performances too. From Arch Manning and Texas holding off a ferocious Ole Miss comeback to New Mexico prevailing over North Dakota State in a monster meeting of Group of 6 postseason hopefuls to Utah's comeback win against Houston, fireworks with conference title and playoff implications were everywhere.

If the past few weeks of college football have felt crazier than usual, it's because they have been. Per ESPN Research, there have been 11 losses by top-10 teams over the past three weeks, tied for the most in any three-week span in the regular season of the AP Poll. The last time that happened? 2007. If that's any indication, there's plenty more madness in store up ahead.

In the meantime, there's plenty to discuss among the nation's top 25 teams. Here's what our experts have to say after another wild weekend across the country. -- Eli Lederman

1. Miami Hurricanes

Previous ranking: 1

The Hurricanes showed no letdown after an emotional double-overtime win over rival Florida State that helped vault them to the No. 1 spot, having no problems with Pitt in a 52-23 win. Malachi Toney showed why he's one of the best players in the country with a school-record 16 catches for 194 yards. If there is one area to nitpick, Miami still has issues at times in pass protection, as Pitt ended up with three sacks and multiple hits on Darian Mensah. The Hurricanes' secondary gave up 334 yards passing, but most of that was when the game was out of reach. Up next is a game at North Carolina. The Canes have to guard against looking too far ahead with Notre Dame looming Nov. 7. -- Andrea Adelson

2. Ohio State Buckeyes

Previous ranking: 3

The Buckeyes spent the bye week retailoring the offense without quarterback Julian Sayin, who's out indefinitely with an elbow injury. True freshman Luke Fahey can run, and at 5-foot-11, expect the Buckeyes to move the pocket around to get him clear lanes to throw the football. Ohio State gave former five-star recruit Tavien St. Clair snaps with the first team this week, as well. The 6-foot-4 St. Clair is talented, though Fahey beat him out for the backup job during the preseason. Can the Buckeyes still make the playoff -- and do some damage once they get there -- without their starting quarterback? This Saturday's game at USC will be telling. -- Jake Trotter

3. Georgia Bulldogs

Previous ranking: 4

The Bulldogs had a needed open date after their surprising 27-24 loss to Auburn at home on Oct. 17. Georgia will try to get healthy and get its running game going after gaining only 113 yards on 28 rushing attempts against the Tigers. The Dawgs will have to find a balanced offense as they prepare to face rival Florida in Atlanta on Saturday before traveling to Ole Miss the next week. Star tailback Nate Frazier looked a little rusty after missing most of two games for Georgia with a rib injury. Top backup Chauncey Bowens has been sidelined the past two outings with a lower-body injury. The offensive line will have to play better than it did against Auburn for Georgia to stay in the SEC title hunt. -- Mark Schlabach

4. BYU Cougars

Previous ranking: 2

After the emotional high of beating Notre Dame last week, the Cougars couldn't keep the momentum rolling in their trip to UCF. The continued absence of star running back LJ Martin with a lower-body injury was glaring in this one, as BYU averaged just 3.2 yards per carry, while quarterback Bear Bachmeier completed just 16 of 32 passes. The Cougars can still play their way to the playoff, but their margin for error has narrowed significantly. -- Kyle Bonagura

5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Previous ranking: 5

The Fighting Irish spent the bye week licking their wounds after a last-second -- or almost last-second -- loss to BYU. After Big 12 officials admitted a mistake in not giving Notre Dame one more crack at a win, it's fair to wonder whether things could've turned out differently. More important for Notre Dame, though, is to put that game behind it, regardless of the controversial ending. Everything the Irish want is still on the horizon; but with Miami awaiting in two weeks, there's no time to sulk over the one that got away. -- David Hale

6. UCLA Bruins

Previous ranking: 6

The Bruins continue to win games in various ways, even if it means starting the first half against Michigan State with two turnovers and going down 7-0 early. It did not matter. Bob Chesney's team quickly bounced back to secure a 28-10 victory by relying on its two pillars yet again: the run game and defense. UCLA posted 245 rushing yards, powered by the three-pronged attack of Jaivian Thomas, Wayne Knight and Anthony Woods. All three got into the end zone once. On defense, UCLA held the Spartans to 156 yards of total offense and nabbed three turnovers in the process. Believe it or not, that was the fifth game in which the Bruins' defense forced three turnovers; overall, UCLA has 22 on the year, second most in the nation. -- Paolo Uggetti

7. Indiana Hoosiers

Previous ranking: 7

Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti said during the spring that the Hoosiers' defense was progressing better than its national championship predecessor, and he might turn out to be right. After stifling Ohio State for much of last week's loss, Indiana leaned on its defense for a 13-6 overtime win at Michigan, which had not lost to an AP top-10 opponent when allowing 13 or fewer points since 1985 (14 straight games). On a day when Hoosiers quarterback Josh Hoover threw his first interception of the season and attempted only one other pass in the second half, Indiana held Michigan out of the end zone and limited the Wolverines to 54 rushing yards on 39 carries. Hoover was not 100%, and Indiana's coaches considered going to backup Grant Wilson; but they stuck with their starter, who made two big plays in overtime to reach the end zone. -- Adam Rittenberg

8. Kentucky Wildcats

Previous ranking: 11

The red-hot Wildcats looked sluggish in the first quarter against Vanderbilt before scoring three straight touchdowns to pull away in a 34-17 win, their sixth straight triumph. Kentucky clinched only its third winning record in the SEC since 1977 and stayed in the hunt for its first league title since 1976. Quarterback Kenny Minchey threw for 203 yards with two total touchdowns, and Kentucky's defense limited the Commodores to only 15 rushing yards and forced two turnovers. The Wildcats get a bye this week before closing the regular season against Tennessee (road), Florida (home), Missouri (road) and Louisville (home). -- Schlabach

9. Utah Utes

Previous ranking: 10

With the nation's longest winning streak and a 7-0 record, the Utes are the envy of programs throughout the country. But cracks have been revealed over the past two weeks, first in squeaking by Colorado then in coming back from down 10-0 at halftime to beat Houston 21-13. For all the praise the Utes have earned offensively, there was a lack of consistency -- half to half -- over the past two weeks that are cause for concern. After both Texas Tech and BYU lost, the Big 12's potential for multiple playoff teams took a hit, and now Utah should be considered the conference favorite. -- Bonagura

10. Alabama Crimson Tide

Previous ranking: 14

It wasn't a pretty win over Texas A&M. Alabama's running game, which had looked much improved over the first month of the season, continued its slide with only 68 yards on 28 carries. But for a team dealing with four starters and a few key reserves out due to injuries, avoiding a third straight loss and getting to the bye week 6-2 was all that mattered for the Crimson Tide. Coach Kalen DeBoer said he hoped that "a lot" of injured players would make it back for a trip to LSU on Nov. 7. It would help if that list includes star wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams and center Racin Delgatty, as their absence has been noticeable. Beyond simple recovery, the Tide need to get back on track when it comes to creating balance on offense and tightening up the secondary. -- Alex Scarborough

11. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Previous ranking: 13

The Demon Deacons were off in Week 8. And with reeling Virginia up next at home and FCS Merrimack after that, they could arrive in Dallas for a showdown with SMU on Nov. 14 with a top-20 ranking and a potential trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the ACC championship game on the line. The keys to Wake Forest's impressive start have been quarterback Gio Lopez and a defensive front led by Langston Hardy and Zach Lohavichan that has proved to be one of the most ferocious in the country. -- Hale

12. LSU Tigers

Previous ranking: 18

The Tigers are peaking at the right time, dominating their past two opponents -- Mississippi State and Auburn -- to the tune of a combined score of 69-17. The return of standout tight end Trey'Dez Green adds to what's becoming a dynamic offense for LSU, balancing out the hard running of tailback Dilin Jones. Quarterback Sam Leavitt carved up Auburn's defense, going for 385 yards and three touchdowns passing and 54 yards and a touchdown rushing. LSU and Lane Kiffin now get a bye week to rest up and reset for what promises to be a daunting final stretch that begins with Alabama in two weeks and continues with Texas and Tennessee. -- Scarborough

13. Texas Longhorns

Previous ranking: 22

The Longhorns don't always make it look easy, but they sure make games entertaining. After building a 24-3 halftime lead, they once again struggled in the third quarter, with Ole Miss outscoring them 14-0 and penalties (14 overall for 134 yards) being a problem. Arch Manning's three turnovers were costly, including a strip sack on a blindside hit that was recovered for a touchdown. Despite the flaws, Texas found some explosive plays, its running game and a way to beat a top-10 team. After two straight losses to unranked teams, Steve Sarkisian said he loved the way his team responded, especially the "edgy" Manning. -- Dave Wilson

14. Ole Miss Rebels

Previous ranking: 8

The Rebels looked as if they could get blown out after a first half when nothing was working. They scored just three points, their fewest in a half in two years, and Texas' Arch Manning was finding a rhythm and hitting some deep shots. The Rebels flipped the game in the second half, including recovering an onside kick and throwing into the end zone on the final play, but their rally came up short. The run defense struggled, allowing Texas to stabilize things after a Manning interception in the fourth. In the end, the Rebels had too many mistakes -- Trinidad Chambliss threw three interceptions -- to overcome on the road. -- Wilson

15. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Previous ranking: 9

The Red Raiders picked a bad day to play their worst football and suffered a 34-27 upset at Cincinnati on Saturday that wasn't as close as the final score suggests. Texas Tech gave up a season-high 255 rushing yards on defense, didn't score its first offensive touchdown until the final minute and was penalized 12 times in a ballgame that got away from it quickly with the Bearcats' 21-0 run before halftime. Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell said it best: "There is no excuse or reason to lose a game like this." Last season, the Red Raiders bounced right back from a Big 12 road loss and went 12-1. They're once again in must-win mode. Can they do it again? The schedule feels much trickier this time, with Arizona, West Virginia and Oklahoma State up next. -- Max Olson

16. Houston Cougars

Previous ranking: 15

The Cougars had one of the country's last unbeaten teams on the ropes but couldn't finish. After holding Utah scoreless in the first half, the Utes rallied to take the lead. Conner Weigman drove Houston to Utah's 23-yard line, but the quarterback was hit and fumbled with 2:15 remaining, closing out the contest. Weigman, who has been one of the best comeback stories this season, threw for 282 yards but was just 4-of-12 in the fourth quarter. The Cougars' two losses have been on the road to two of the Big 12's best teams -- Utah and Texas Tech -- and they were in both games until the final minutes. -- Wilson

17. Northwestern Wildcats

Previous ranking: 20

Aidan Chiles and the Wildcats were coming off their shakiest performance of the season and had several starters out against Rutgers. They responded with a decisive effort in improving to 6-1 before their most critical stretch of the season: at Oregon, versus Iowa and at Ohio State. Chiles threw his first interception but accounted for 302 offensive yards and three touchdowns, including a 37-yard run in the fourth quarter that sealed the win. Running back Caleb Komolafe added 150 rushing yards and a TD. Northwestern struggled to stop the run (244 yards allowed) but limited Rutgers star wideout KJ Duff to three catches for 33 yards and recorded three takeaways. The next few weeks will show if Northwestern is a true CFP contender. -- Rittenberg

18. Florida Gators

Previous ranking: 21

The Gators had an open date to prepare for rival Georgia and to get healthy. Quarterback Aaron Philo missed the Oct. 17 victory at Texas with a shoulder injury, and wide receiver Vernell Brown III has been out three weeks with a knee injury. Additionally, wideout Bailey Stockton was hurt against the Longhorns. Being at full strength to try to beat the Bulldogs this Saturday for the first time since 2020 will be perhaps the biggest key. -- Adelson

19. Boise State Broncos

Previous ranking: 23

The Broncos played with their food at Washington State, entering the fourth quarter tied 10-10 before storming to a 31-10 win with three touchdowns in the final 7:14. Boise State's seasonlong search for consistency continues and could be the largest inhibitor to the program's postseason aspirations. For now, let's talk about Broncos running back and NCAA rushing leader Dylan Riley. The third-year ball carrier had a quieter than usual night in Week 8 but saved his best for last with fourth-quarter rushing scores of 33 and 72 yards to help Boise State pull away. The longer scamper was Riley's third rushing score of 70-plus yards this fall, the most in the FBS. Like Ashton Jeanty in 2024, Boise State has a bona fide game changer in the backfield capable of lifting the Broncos back to the CFP. -- Lederman

20. Tennessee Volunteers

Previous ranking: 12

The Volunteers head into a bye week shaking their heads after they made far too many mistakes in a 27-24 loss at South Carolina on Saturday. Tennessee committed 12 penalties for 90 yards, including three that took touchdowns off the scoreboard. Just as bad, quarterback George MacIntyre forgot to hand the ball off on a fourth-and-1 play at South Carolina's 38-yard line, resulting in a one-yard loss. The Gamecocks scored the tying touchdown with 1:17 to play. But after MacIntyre lost a fumble on a sack, South Carolina's Malik Orsan kicked a 48-yard field goal at the buzzer to end Tennessee's four-game winning streak. -- Schlabach

21. Arizona Wildcats

Previous ranking: 24

The Wildcats are rolling. They've been dominant over the past three weeks, including Saturday's 39-3 rout of Iowa State in Tucson. With Texas Tech up next, Arizona has a chance to deliver another statement win and take an important step toward the Big 12 title game. Wildcats wideout Isaiah Mizell (27 catches, 493 yards, five TDs) has quietly emerged as one of the best receivers in the Big 12. -- Bonagura

22. SMU Mustangs

Previous ranking: 19

After trailing Cal at halftime, the Mustangs turned it on in their most dominant performance of the season and posted a 59-20 victory that kept them in the mix for the ACC championship game. SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said following Saturday's contest he was waiting on such an effort after SMU had reached 30 points only once in its previous Power 4 matchups this season. SMU scored 42 of its 59 points and racked up 306 of its 492 total yards in the second half. Kevin Jennings set the school record with his 74th career touchdown pass, surpassing the record of 72 set by Tanner Mordecai from 2021 to 2022. -- Adelson

23. Missouri Tigers

Previous ranking: 25

The Tigers, who were on a bye this past weekend, are beat up. Missouri listed a season-high 24 players on its initial availability report prior to the program's lifeless, 31-3 loss at Ole Miss in Week 7. Among that group were more than a dozen regular starters and contributors, including tight end Brett Norfleet, linebacker Robert Woodyard Jr. and edge rusher Darris Smith. If coach Eli Drinkwitz and the Tigers are going to bounce back over the final month of the regular season, they need to get healthy with ranked matchups against Texas, Georgia and Kentucky waiting in November on the other side of a Halloween visit to Arkansas. -- Lederman

24. New Mexico Lobos

Previous ranking: NR

Jason Eck's Lobos made the most of their big moment Saturday night with a 21-16 home victory over North Dakota State that seriously boosts their résumé as a CFP contender. New Mexico never trailed thanks to a strong night from its defense. The Lobos held NDSU to a season-low 53 rushing yards on 28 attempts, got a 56-yard pick-six from Austin Brawley early in the fourth quarter and made a critical fourth-down stop with 1:33 remaining to hold off a late rally. New Mexico remains alone atop the Mountain West standings at 6-1 with a one-score road loss against Oklahoma. This squad is well-positioned to compete with Boise State for the Group of 6 playoff bid the rest of the way if it can keep rolling. -- Olson

25. Oregon State Beavers

Previous ranking: NR

The Beavers had their bye week but pulled off a massive victory Friday when wide receiver Jesse Legree announced he is re-signing with Oregon State to return in 2027. The superstar true freshman has no interest in leaving Corvallis and the coaching staff that took a chance on him in December when nobody else would. Even with the week off, Legree is still the nation's leading receiver and the only FBS wideout who has surpassed 1,000 yards. Oregon State remains tied with Boise State atop the Pac-12 standings and will look to extend its five-game win streak at Fresno State this Saturday. -- Olson
