Maresca says he would describe Manchester City as âÂÂcheatsâ if he was a United fan
Manager claims City fans suffering more than players
Captain Rúben Dias: âÂÂWeâÂÂre calm. We trust the clubâÂÂ
Enzo Maresca has admitted he would describe Manchester City as âÂÂcheatsâ if he were a Manchester United or Arsenal fan. The managerâÂÂs comments came as he suggested it had been harder for CityâÂÂs supporters to deal with the scandal surrounding the club than it had been for him or the players.
Maresca guided City to an impressive 3-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday in their first game since the club ere found guilty of more than 100 charges related to breaches of the Premier LeagueâÂÂs financial rules. He was asked whether the performance was down to the team being brought closer together by the guilty verdict.
âÂÂIt probably has been more tough for our fans than for the players or for me as itâÂÂs more complicated,â he said, âÂÂbecause if I am an Arsenal fan or a United fan and you are a City fan, I can tell you: âÂÂHey, my friend, you cheatâ â or this kind of thing. But we were happy at the end of the game and inside the changing room. We were very happy celebrating the three points because we know how difficult it is at Anfield.âÂÂ
City, who have appealed against the independent commissionâÂÂs ruling and continue to protest their innocence, have drawn criticism for the exuberant manner of SundayâÂÂs celebration. Maresca defended the revelry but is conscious of the need to focus on WednesdayâÂÂs visit of Paris Saint-Germain in their second Champions League game of the season, following their 2-0 victory at Porto.
âÂÂWe won 0-3 at Anfield,â Maresca said. âÂÂEven if it was 0-1 it would be exactly the same. We are here today to win tomorrowâÂÂs game and we work every day to win games. ItâÂÂs the only thing that we can think; we can be focused. The rest is just things from outside that we need to deal with but we were so happy inside the pitch and you cannot imagine inside the changing room.
âÂÂI promise you that I stress a lot about the gameplan and how we can train every day but I donâÂÂt stress about things I donâÂÂt [control]. The message to the players will be the same. We know how serious the situation is but at the same time itâÂÂs not something that we can do [anything about].âÂÂ
Rúben Dias, CityâÂÂs captain, echoed his manager. âÂÂWhen you build yourself as a player, you build yourself against any noise,â the defender said. âÂÂPersonally, and I feel like I speak for the whole group, weâÂÂre very calm. We trust the club, and weâÂÂre very focused on enjoying football. People donâÂÂt love us winning and we love to win.âÂÂ
Pep Guardiola is expected to be at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday in a show of support for CityâÂÂs owners. âÂÂIn case heâÂÂs coming, itâÂÂs a nice feeling,â Maresca said of his predecessor. âÂÂEspecially for him, because this has been his house for 10 years. ItâÂÂs exciting for everyone.âÂÂ
