Duchess of Sussex âÂÂdeeply distressedâ over child sexual abuse image claims against father
Meghan also reveals she was made aware of âÂÂdisturbing allegationsâ against him in 2018 by Met police
The Duchess of Sussex has said she is âÂÂdeeply distressedâ over accusations involving child sexual abuse images against her estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr, and revealed she was made aware of âÂÂdisturbing allegationsâ against him in 2018 by the Metropolitan police.
Meghan issued a statement after the Sun newspaper published claims that her half-brother Thomas Markle Jr alleged he had found a stash of images belonging to their father at his former home in the Philippines.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Markle Sr denied possessing child sexual abuse images, calling the accusations âÂÂsick liesâÂÂ.
It is understood that authorities in the UK had previously told Meghan that allegations made about her father in a 2018 letter sent to Scotland Yard, and subsequently shared with her by the police, were being investigated.
In a statement through her spokesperson, Meghan said: âÂÂI am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed.
âÂÂIn 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me. It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated.
âÂÂI hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publicationsâ distortion over the years, any distance from my father, and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them.
âÂÂI trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families.
âÂÂAlthough the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children.âÂÂ
The 2018 letter was understood to have been shared with Meghan by the royalty and specialist protection unit within the Met police.
Markle Sr has been estranged from the duchess since he failed to attend her wedding to Prince Harry on health grounds, and has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five.
The Sun reported that Markle Jr told detectives in the Philippines he had discovered âÂÂhundreds, if not thousandsâ of child sexual abuse images on computers and mobile phones stored in four large boxes at the home in Cebu where Markle Sr was living until he returned to the US in May after having a stroke.
Markle Jr, 60, said he had also contacted the FBI in the US, the Sun reported.
MeghanâÂÂs father has vehemently denied possessing child sexual abuse images, telling the Daily Mail that the accusations were âÂÂsick liesâÂÂ.
He told the newspaper the computers had not been in his possession since he left Rosarito, Mexico, with his son in January 2025 and moved to the Philippines âÂÂfor a fresh startâÂÂ.
Speaking from a rehabilitation centre in Florida, where he is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after his left leg was amputated because of a blood clot, he told the Mail: âÂÂIâÂÂm shocked, IâÂÂm hurt and IâÂÂm very upset that my son is making these accusations against me. I could never do what IâÂÂm being accused of. ItâÂÂs the worst thing anyone could accuse me of.
âÂÂThis is bullshit. ItâÂÂs just a bunch of lies. ItâÂÂs sick. I have no idea why Tom is trying to destroy me with these lies.âÂÂ
