FRISCO, Texas -- Newly acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. will be available to make his Dallas Cowboys debut Sunday against the Houston Texans.
Porter, who prior to joining Dallas had been ruled out of Thursday's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns after saying his back was tight, practiced the past two days with the Cowboys and carries no injury designation into Sunday.
Speaking on 105.3 The Fan after practice Friday, executive vice president Stephen Jones said, "We actually think Joey Porter will get snaps."
Before practice, coach Brian Schottenheimer spoke positively about Porter's chances but did not fully commit to the cornerback playing. Schottenheimer wanted Porter to "stack a second day" after what he called a "really impressive" first practice Thursday.
"I think we've got a really good plan that, if he does play, where we will use him and what that will look like," Schottenheimer said. "But adding the red zone defenses in there today will be a big part of us feeling comfortable about doing it. But like I said [Thursday], he's trending in the right way and he's working really hard at it."
The Cowboys acquired Porter from the Steelers late Wednesday night for a 2027 sixth-round pick and 2028 second-round pick.
With a smile, Porter said Thursday that his back was "feeling better."
"We're just trying to take things day by day, and if everything looks good, then we should be out there," Porter said.
Porter has not played in a game since the Steelers' wild-card loss to the Texans in January. While still learning the Cowboys' defense, he knows what Houston likes to do offensively.
"I think it really just gave me the utmost confidence because I feel like I played well last time I played them in the playoffs," Porter said. "So now the first time I'm suiting up, hopefully suit up, it'll be against them. I mean, that would be ideal. I'm pretty used to their scheme and what they want to do with [C.J. Stroud], and I think I could be a matchup for that."
The Cowboys will be without linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring) for the third straight game and cornerback Cobie Durant (hamstring) for the second straight game.
Cornerback Shavon Revel (knee/ankle) was a full participant Friday after being limited the first two practices of the week and does not carry an injury designation. Safety Malik Hooker, who fractured a forearm in the season opener, is set to return after missing the past two games.
