In the ever-shifting winds of the modern-day entertainment business, a popular TV debut doesn’t necessarily equal success. Look no further than Prime Video’s Ballard, a surefire hit that became the most-viewed TV series on the platform and earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating. By every conceivable metric, Ballard Season 1 was a success, and yet the show may not be renewed for a second season despite work being done on the script.

Of course, Ballard should be renewed for Season 2. Maggie Q admirably carries the torch passed to her by Titus Welliver, who appears multiple times as famed detective Harry Bosch. With the refreshing location change, superb supporting cast, and plotted source material adapted from Michael Connelly’s novels, fans deserve to see more of Ballard following the Season 1 cliffhanger. Yet, according to Q, the show’s fate is murkier than it should be.

Has Ballard Been Renewed for Season 2?

Due to Maggie Q’s commanding turn, the shift to West L.A.’s sunny beaches, and the solid support led by Welliver, Taylor, and John Carroll Lynch, Ballard quickly became Prime Video’s most-viewed TV show. With an 81 Metascore, 100% Tomato Meter score, and 78% Popcorn Meter score on Rotten Tomatoes, many felt that the series was a refreshing antidote to the tired and stale Bosch: Legacy.

Unfortunately, Ballard’s fate hangs in the air despite its massive first-season success on Prime Video. Although it has drawn near-universal acclaim and become the most popular show on the platform, Maggie Q has voiced confused frustration about why the series has not yet been renewed for Season 2. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Q stated:

“I have no sense (about renewal). This industry is not what it was before. It’s barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable. They can throw out a show in two seconds, and it doesn’t make a ton of difference that whole worlds and livelihoods are at stake. Studios always have options. But we have a writers room, and they’ve been writing away.

The arc for the second season is very exciting. But I’ve had writers room hired before and then gotten canceled. So everyone’s like, “Maggie, of course!” I’m like, “No, no, no.” There is no “of course.” I am not a negative person at all. I’m a very positive person, but I’m a realist.”

As for the exciting Season 2 arc, Season 1 ended with a shocking turn of events that saw Ballard accused of murder and arrested by the police. With the legal shoe on the other foot, so to speak, Ballard will almost certainly turn to Bosch and his pal in the D.A. for help.

Yet, despite a talented writers’ room working tirelessly on the Season 2 arc, Amazon has not renewed Ballard, thereby unnecessarily hedging the fate of the series. This is a far cry from Netflix, which just renewed Wednesday for Season 3 before the premiere of Season 2.

Steeling herself for the worst possibilities, Q added that she had not read the positive reviews of Ballard, adding:

“They sent me reviews this morning, and I didn’t want to read them. I’m glad they’re positive, but I don’t want to read them.”

We’d Be Shocked If ‘Ballard’ Isn’t Renewed

Although Maggie Q has expressed clear-eyed realism about the expendable nature of successful TV series in the streaming age, she remains hopeful about Ballard‘s fate. One of the things that attracted her to the project in the first place was how Ballard subverts police procedural tropes and remains unpredictable, saying:

“I have a high filter for tropes. I’m constantly reading things, and I will have a cellular reaction to something if it feels tropey to me. My whole body will tighten up. I’ll tell showrunners, but I swear it’s out of love. I just don’t want to fall into those typical traps. Obviously, there’s no way you can ever completely avoid them.”

More promising yet for Ballard fans is Q’s insistence that the show will persist. When asked what’s next in her career, Q said:

“There are a couple indies that I’m really excited about, and they’re looking for financing. If we get a season two of Ballard, I think we’ll be back in the fall to shoot. I’m really happy right now.”

Ballard Season 1 was filmed between July and November 2024 and premiered on July 9, 2025. If Season 2 films in the fall of 2025, as Q hopes, then the series is likely to return to Prime Video by the summer or fall of 2026.

Regardless of when it happens, Amazon should have already renewed Ballard for Season 2. Maggie Q has delivered a career-best performance, the show has remained at the top of the Prime Video viewing charts for two weeks straight, has earned a perfect RT score, and has made many fans forget about the lackluster final season of Bosch: Legacy. If that’s not successful enough to warrant a renewal, what is?
