These 6 Zohran Mamdani Policies Are Popular Nationwide, Poll Finds

  • A new YouGov poll found that Zohran Mamdani’s main policy proposals are popular nationwide.
  • The most popular proposal is raising taxes on millionaires and corporations.
  • But even his controversial proposal to open city-run grocery stores earned majority support.

Zohran Mamdani won a hard-fought race for mayor of New York City last week. Now, new polling shows that his agenda is popular well beyond the city’s five boroughs.

A YouGov poll of American adults found that six of Mamdani’s main policy proposals enjoy majority support nationwide.

The most popular was Mamdani’s proposal to raise taxes on millionaires and corporations: 69% of respondents said they support the idea, including 40% of self-identified Republicans.

His proposal to provide free childcare for children under five years old is also broadly popular, with 66% of respondents expressing support. So is his proposal to freeze rent for lower-income tenants, with 65% of respondents saying they support the idea.

Even some of the mayor-elect’s more controversial policies earned majority support from respondents.

57% said they support the idea of opening city-run grocery stories, while 56% said they support increasing the minimum wage to $30 by 2030.

Permanently eliminating fares for busses ended up being the least popular of the policy proposals polled: just 53% expressed support.

The poll included 1,133 adult US citizens and was conducted between November 5 and 8, after the Mamdani’s victory.

Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa in a closely-watched race on Tuesday.

Several big-name billionaires spent heavily on the race in an effort to defeat Mamdani, with many expressing skepticism about his economic proposals.

Since then, some in the business community have sounded a conciliatory note, saying they’re rooting for Mamdani’s success as mayor.

Mamdani is set to be sworn in on January 1, 2026.
