Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners became one of the most successful original R-rated horror films of the last decade after its April 18, 2025, release. The movie, which stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, has garnered raving reviews from critics, moviegoers, and Coogler’s fellow Hollywood peers. So far, it has grossed over $70 million at the box office and marked the best start for an original film since Jordan Peele’s Us (2019). In an X (formerly Twitter) post on the film’s official account, the director detailed his appreciation for those who purchased tickets and went out of their way to support his record-breaking project.
Eternal Gratitude. My heart is bursting with it. I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see SINNERS. Who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterward and talked and made a friend. Who changed their work schedules. Who saw the film in groups. I want to thank all of you who watched more than once, who recommended the film to others, both in person and on social media or on your text message chains.

Ryan Coogler’s latest landed the biggest opening for an original film in six years, topping not one, but two Jordan Peele horror hits.
Coogler also revealed that Sinners was inspired by his family and ancestry in the heartfelt letter. He said that the opportunity to make the film was a gift and that the audience was always in mind, adding that he and his team felt a deep responsibility to entertain the audience and move them in the only way cinema can. While some directors believe cinema is going downhill, Coogler believes that theatrical experience is necessary.
I believe in cinema. I believe in the theatrical experience. I believe it is a necessary pillar of society. It’s why me and so many of my colleagues have dedicated our lives to the craft. We don’t get to do what we do if you don’t show up. The global theatrical audience has allowed me to dream, find a career, and build a more sustainable life for me and my family. And the only way I know how to thank you for that, is by continuing to mine my personal human experience and my relationships for more stories to bring to you in cinematic language. To see your response to the film has reinvigorated me and many others who believe in this art form.
A personal letter is undoubtedly a sincere way to send a message to supporters. Not many directors of his status take the time to say “Thank You” to those who massively contribute to a production’s success: moviegoers.
Ryan Coogler Shares His Cinematic Influences
While some people reach a certain level and become big-headed, Ryan Coogler chooses to highlight his cinematic influences and bestow thanks up those who make his movies successful. His “Thank You” letter also mentions those who inspired him to reach new heights in films. From Spike Lee to John Singleton, Ernie Barnes, Steve McQueen, Ava Duvernay, Euzhan Palcy, Robert Rodriguez, Barry Jenkins, and Quentin Tarantino. Steven Spielberg, Jordan Peele, Stephen King, and so many more talented directors, writers and producers were also mentioned.
Coogler also highlighted the people behind the camera who rarely get praise for the exceptional work they do. While mentioning how imperative his 13-year partnership with Michael B. Jordan has been, Coogler also gave a shout-out to Michael Shawver. He’s the picture editor that the director has been working with for 15 years, and who also edited Sinners.
